Viking Orbiter Final Mission Profile Meetings Collection, 1976.

The records in this collection document the meetings of the Viking Mission Planning Group (MPG). They cover the period from April 16 to December 23, 1976, which began just prior to Mars Orbit Insertion and includes the initial mission exploration period. During this time, the group met almost daily to review the status of Viking Orbiters 1 and 2 mission operations. As a result, the records fall naturally into a chronological arrangement. J. D. Porter was the MPG Chief. The records for each meeting typically include an attendance sheet, signed by those present. Except for "Day 1," April 16, 1976, the "Day" designation for each meeting was determined by the numerical day of the year, beginning the count with January 1, 1976. Although not everyone involved attended each meeting, frequent and regular attendees included staff members from the Obiter Performance Analysis Group (OPAG), Orbiter Science Group (OSG), Lander Performance Analysis Group (LPAG), Spacecraft Performance and Flight Path Analysis Directorate (SPFPAD), Science Analysis and Mission Planning (SAMP), Science Analysis and Mission Planning Directorate (SAMPD), Flight Path Analysis Group (FPAG), Mission Director's Office (MDO), Principle Investigator Team (PIT), and Mission Control Directorate (MCD). The documentation for each meeting varies dependent upon spacecraft operations and mission requirements. However, issues commonly addressed in each meeting included spacecraft command requests, computer memory load estimates and evaluation, profile change requests, lander transmission schedules, science data handling schedules, and statistical events summaries.
